How to Send Birthday Gifts to Family Who Live Far Away
By The Daymark Team · · 6 min read

The best long-distance birthday gift arrives a little early, can be enjoyed right away, and comes with a personal message. Choose something that ships reliably—flowers, a bakery treat, a candle or a handwritten card—order it at least two weeks ahead, and plan a call for when it lands.
Family in another state is the hardest group to get right because there's no fallback. You can't drop by with a cake if the package is late. A bit of planning solves most of that.
Start with an address list
Before you think about gifts, gather current addresses for everyone outside your city: parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins you're close to. Include apartment numbers and ZIP codes. Older relatives sometimes have a mailing address that differs from where they live, so ask which one packages should go to.
Store the list in one place. If you use Daymark, each person's address is saved once and checked to be a valid US address.
Choose gifts that travel well
Delicate, heavy or perishable items are risky across state lines. Gifts that tend to travel well:
Flowers from a shop that ships hand-tied bouquets in protective packaging. Cookies and other sturdy baked goods, sealed for freshness—check allergies and dietary needs first. Candles, which can sit on a porch without harm. And handwritten cards, the lightest and often the most kept.
Avoid anything that needs assembly, a signature, or fits only one size unless you're sure.

Match the gift to the person
Grandparents: a handwritten card, possibly with flowers. Many keep cards for years. Parents: something they'd enjoy that day without effort—flowers for a mom who loves them, cookies for a dad who says he wants nothing. Siblings: something you'd share if you were together, like a treat. Nieces and nephews: a card with a note addressed to them directly.
Time it so it arrives first
Order two to three weeks ahead for normal shipping. Ask for delivery in the days before the birthday rather than on it. If the person is likely to be away for their birthday weekend, aim earlier still.
Daymark gives an estimated arrival window from three days before the birthday through the day itself, and sends you a reminder 14 days before each saved date so you're not ordering at the last minute.
Make the delivery part of the day
A box at the door is nice; a box plus a call is better. Text them that something's coming. Schedule a video call for the evening. If siblings are chipping in, send one gift from everyone with every name in the note, rather than three small packages.
Keep it going year after year
The real challenge with far-away family isn't one birthday—it's every birthday, anniversary and holiday across several states. Save all of them once. Daymark reminds you 14 days before each, with the person's usual gift ready to review, and you approve or skip each time. You can also schedule any of them up to a year ahead.
Daymark ships within the US only, so it won't help with relatives abroad.
